Hall of Fame Night Moves to May 25 with 2024 Inductees
YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Flipping the calendar over to May means another chance to preserve the rich history of the Super Sportsman, Late Model, Street Stock, and Extreme Stock divisions at BAPS Motor Speedway.
It’s a time when the legends of these classes are selected to go into the Hall of Fame. The annual honor has been going on for six seasons and has become one of the most popular nights on the schedule.
This year’s class will be enshrined on May 25 during Warhorse Camp Hill Night. And like the classes of the past, this year’s group features individuals who have made their mark in the sport.
Russ Smith is this year’s Super Sportsman nominee. He will be joined by Kenny Weaver (Late Model), Butch Richcreek (Street Stock), Mike Goodwin (Extreme Stock), Ree Smith (Builder/Mechanic), R.W. Lutz (Owner), and Jack Frazier (Special Achievement).
“This is our seventh season doing this, and it’s become one of the best events on our schedule,” said Kolten Gouse, General Manager of the speedway. “There has been so much talent in these divisions over the years, and it is great to be able to honor the legends of the sport.
“We are excited about this year’s class. Every one of these individuals have made contributions to Silver Spring or BAPS Motor Speedway, whether it was entertaining fans, announcing the events, or building the racecars that took drivers to victory.”
Here is a look at the 2024 Hall of Fame class:
Russ Smith: This legend racked up 35 Super Sportsman wins at Silver Spring Speedway, which is seventh all time. He added thirty-four more wins at other speedways, giving him 69 in the division for his career. Of those sixty-nine victories, six came at BAPS Motor Speedway. He is a two-time Silver Spring track champion (1966 and 1971).
Kenny Weaver: The Limited Late Model ace was a heavy hitter at BAPS Motor Speedway in the late seventies. Not only was he a fixture in Victory Lane, he was also able to land a pair of track championships with back-to-back titles in 1877 and 1978.
Butch Richcreek: Like Kenny Weaver, Richcreek was a handful for the competition at BAPS Motor Speedway. He registered 27 Street Stock wins at the speedway, which has him at the top of the list all time in the division. He also won back-to-back track titles in 1981 and 1982.
Mike Goodwin: There were times when competitors knew they were running for second when Goodwin was in the field. He won twenty times in the Extreme Stock division, which places him fifth on the all-time win list. If that was not enough, he earned the 2005 track championship at BAPS Motor Speedway.
Ree Smith: When you look at accomplished mechanics in the world of Super Sportsman racing, Smith is in that elite group. Smith has won track championships at Silver Spring Speedway with three different drivers — twice with Dwight Leib, Mark Smith, and Frankie Herr. He is also won the Super Sportsman 100 three times, once with all three of those drivers. He has worked with Rich Eichelberger, Fred Putney, Lynn Paxton, Mark Smith, and Frankie Herr.
R.W. Lutz: One of the most iconic Super Sportsman cars was the No. A1 driven by Dwight Leib, which featured a rounded hood. The car was owned by R.W. Lutz, and it accounted for a slew of wins, including the Super Sportsman 100 win. He also owned cars for Ron Kreitzer and Super Sportsman legend Jerry Wolfe.
Jack Frazier: When you think of announcers in central Pennsylvania, you cannot have a discussion without mentioning Jack Frazier. He was the beloved voice of Silver Spring Speedway and Susquehanna Speedway for years.
